Mr. Callahan has an impressive history of innovation in the visual effects industry.
Notably, his work has centered on the development of ground-breaking applications used in
the production of computer generated imagery for feature film, television and real-time
projects. His experience coping with the complexities of large scale productions led
to his development of Temerity Pipeline and his founding of Temerity Software to respond to
the growing industry need for production control solutions.
Jim has been responsible for creating novel software solutions and has acted as a creative
lead using this software on some of the most complex visual effects projects.
Most recently, while working at Weta Digital, he created a distributed particle
system capable of utilizing large numbers of processors on single simulations containing
hundreds of millions of particles. This system was used primarily to generate
natural phenomena effects involving fluid dynamics, such as clouds, smoke and fire.
Also while at Weta, Jim created Nimbus, a fully RenderMan compliant volumetric renderer
which included extensions to Shading Language to support volumetric shaders. His
earlier work includes development of Hookah, the fluid dynamics simulator/renderer used
by Dream Quest Images to create stunning effects sequences in films such as "Armageddon"
and "Mission to Mars". Jim was also responsible for creating the advanced AI system
used by interactive characters in "Aladdin's Magic Carpet Ride", a pioneering VR project
created at Walt Disney Imagineering.
